I had heard in an interview with Gans I think where he said somebody had given him a bunch of shows to get a feel for the material, and after hearing a good old 73 version or two of HCSunshine, he really pushed for them to bring it back. I don't know about him doing it solo or anything, that's highly possible, I just recall that interview.

I love the song. Though sometimes I think maybe it just wasn't meant to stick around after 74. Can't say I have heard many of the 90's versions, to me they just pale in comparison to something like 12/19/73. Though I have enjoyed many a version by Phil and such, as well as some local cover band versions, and it's a song that deserves it's due and should remain current. Matter of fact Furthur did a greeeeat version of it in St. Louis last Thursday. Probably the highlight of the first set for me.

Here is a link to an interview where Vince talks about doing it in his side band the Affordables and letting Jerry hear the tape.

As for a version of a song in the '90s not being as good as 1973, I don't think that is limited to Here Comes Sunshine. Funny thing for me is that I always thought the song sounded dated, because of the issues with the chorus that initiated this thread and just assumed that was the reason they dropped it when they did. A lot of the Wake material was going fit well with the Disco Dead that was starting to emerge by 1976. I like the song so i do understand bringing it back. Loose Lucy on the other hand, not sure why that had to return.
